Our kids had a wonderful morning at the Be Pro Be Proud Draft Day event at ASUMH. Thanks to everyone in our community (and beyond) who made this day possible!

Congratulations to our own 8th grade mathematician, Eliza Obert! Eliza attended the talent identification program at the Arkansas School for Math, Sciences, and the Arts in January, where she, along with 62 others, took the AMC-8 math exam. Eliza had the highest score of all 8th graders who tested, and her performance on the exam placed her in second overall. We are so proud!

Congratulations to junior high student Haley Cardoza for receiving a recognition award from her bus driver!
From her certificate: "This recognition award is being presented to Haley Cardoza due to the great compassion she shows for other students on the school bus. When a fellow passenger is upset or there is a dispute, Haley has stepped up to help mediate.
Driver Diane Slinkman of Bus Route 51 appreciates this help, as it makes the route so much smoother. This kind of compassion for other students is commendable and appreciated."
Our drivers love and appreciate their passengers, and this recognition is just one way they celebrate them!

Congratulations to Oakley Recktenwald (8th grade), who was nominated and selected to be the January First Security Bank Leadership Award recipient! Here's what was shared about Oakley:
Oakley is the ideal student to earn "Student of the Month." He is an incredible young man who works diligently to achieve his best. He is incredibly honest and if there is an error or misjudgment, he takes time to evaluate what was done, understand it from the other person's point-of-view, and take accountability.
In addition, Oakley is confident in a way that is not boastful or arrogant. He knows his capabilities and uses them not just for himself, but to assist others. This allows him to stand up for what he believes in and help others understand where he is coming from; however, he is not one to try to force them to agree with him, he is always open to listening, and accepts others for who they are .
Oakley is willing to step out of his comfort zone. We recently started a debate club this year and he was one of the 1st 8th graders to join. In addition, he was the first 8th grade person to participate in an actual debate. This was not only done in front of his peers, but in addition, 9th graders also evaluated. For an 8th grader, this is definitely a step out of the comfort zone.
Oakley is one of the only students I have who comes to me after an assignment and wants to know what he specifically missed and how to correct it in the future. He works hard in his sports accomplishments; however, his dedication to his academics is beyond impressive. He is consistently showing how he wants to grow as a student and leader.
He is truly a deserving recipient of this award.

Nelson-Wilks-Herron's clothes closet has grown over the last year with the help of local donations and grants. The clothes closet now has a much-needed inventory of clothes and shoes, thanks to the Baxter Besties. This local group, headed by Sherri Shelton, has generously donated to our school. The nurse and the counselor are now able to provide clean clothes and shoes quickly and easily. This allows our students to miss less class time.
