MHPS CLASSIFIED STAFF HIGHLIGHT: Mr. Thomas Merry Prior to joining MHPS, I worked at The University of Notre Dame as the Purchasing Manager for the concessions and catering for all sports. Ordering and dispersing the food for all of the sporting events gave me the opportunity to be on-hand for all the games. Soon I realized I wanted to be more involved in the menu planning, so I accepted the Concessions Manager position. Some people may think having your office in a 90,000-seat football facility would be the best part of the job; however, for me it was the creativity in creating menus that was the allure. During this time I bought a bakery that featured an Amish soft pretzel hand-twisted by one of our pretzel artisans. It didn't take long to realize I was a cook not a baker. I have worked many concerts, collegiate sporting events, and fed some famous people. However the most interesting was making Mitt Romney a pretzel when he was running for President. He was in shock when we rang it up and charged him full price for it. The best part of working here at MHPS is trying to make lunch a positive time for the students. Our dedicated staff truly cares about cooking food that these kids will enjoy and doing it within the strict guidelines of the government.

SEAD (Student Education Against Drugs) was invited to meet with the Secretary of Health last Wednesday when she was in town for our "Capital for a Day" event. Mrs. Case and Mrs. Davidson took two current leaders (Kylie Andrews and Monica Chafin) and two rising leaders (Savannah Davidson and Barrett Miller) to visit with several people from the department of health and the Secretary of Health, Renee Mallory. There were other community partners at the meeting as well who are part of the PAYS coalition. They met at the Juvenile Services office and Kylie Andrews and Monica Chafin gave a report of the work that SEAD is doing in the district to promote being drug/vape free. The students were amazing and made a big impression on all who were in attendance.

Retired Police Officer Mr. Nevin Barnes spoke to Mrs. Quick's Advisory Class today during mentor time at the High School. He is the father of the class mentor, Mrs. Brooke Barnes-Grissum from Ultimate Auto. Thanks to Mr. Barnes for taking the time to talk to our students!

Band Director Jill Chentnik was recently a guest clinician for one of ASBOA's Region 8 Junior High All-Region Bands. 108 students from 18 different schools in the Fort Smith/Van Buren area performed a concert of four songs after only four (2 hour) rehearsals. Congrats to Mrs. Chentnik on being selected as a guest clinician. You're a pro! Congratulations to all the involved students as well!

Track & Field Indoor State Recap Highlights Junior Eli Jones won the shot put with a new personal best of 52’4". His mark was the top mark out of all classifications. The boys 4x800 took first place with a time of 8:16.29 with Connor King, Trenton Smith, Hendrix Hughes, and William Hill. William Hill placed second in the 3200m with a time of 9:40.74 minutes. Connor King ran to third place in the 1600m with a time of 4:40.65 minutes. Adam Jones placed second in the pole vault by clearing 14’6”. Senior Merritt McConnell scored in all four events she competed in. McConnell broke her own school record in the long jump with 17’0.75” to place third. She placed fifth in both the 60m and 200m with 8.27 seconds and 27.17 seconds. McConnell along with Camilla Johnson, Jamie Chandler, and Monica Chafin were part of the 4x400m team that placed fifth with a time of 4:38.79 minutes. Bombers who scored: - Hendrix Hughes placed 4th in the 3200m with 10:16.53min - Barrett Miller placed 7th in the 60m with 7.15 seconds. - Talan Palmer placed 7th in the long jump with 20’0” - Trenton Smith placed 8th in the 1600 with 4:47.66 minutes. - Ali Czanstkowski placed 5th in triple jump with 32’7.75” and high jump clearing 4’10”. - Camilla Johnson placed 6th in the 60m hurdles with 10.39 seconds - Pixie Bolick placed 7th in the 60m hurdles with 10.60 seconds - Erin Smith placed 7th in the 3200m with 12:55.86 minutes - Girls 4x800 with Erin Smith, Cisily Goettler, Jamie Chandler, and Hailie Chandler placed 5th with a time of 11:16.07min. The boys placed third overall with 56 points. Russellville won with 98 points only three points ahead of Lakeside. Lady Bombers placed sixth overall with 38.5 points. The Mountain Home Jr. High Quiz Bowl team took 3rd place at the 6A Regional quiz bowl tournament held in Greenbriar on Saturday. This win gives them the opportunity to play in the state tournament that will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Pulaski Academy. Two of our players, Wave Simmons and Christian Belicek, were named All-Stars during the tournament. First and Second grade students at Nelson-Wilks-Herron Elementary worked hard to create art as gifts for our school board members for School Board Recognition Month. These seven students worked diligently to create beautiful art! We are so proud to provide art for our leaders to enjoy from the young students in our district! Big shout out to our MHJH students and staff! Each year students across Arkansas participate in NWEA testing. This is a norm-referenced test that shows a student's academic growth longitudinally from Kindergarten through 12th grade. This test is given three times a year. This year after our MHJH math students took their beginning of year tests, they were scoring above the national average. In 8th grade, our students were testing 2.6 points above, while our 9th grade students were testing 6 points above the national average. After our middle of year testing, we are excited to report that our students are growing well above the national average of students in the same age and grade levels. Our 8th grade students are now 4.4 points above the national average, and our 9th graders are testing 9 points above! This is incredible growth for our students! Well done MHJH teachers and students! Your hard work is paying off!

Big congratulations to Abigail Howerton for completing the entire Susan Barton System for reading! This is a huge accomplishment that takes years of work, and she completed it while in middle school. So proud!
